I suspect you have a hole in the diaphram that allows fuel to come from the tank to the carb or you have a hole in the vacuum line that opens the daiphram in the fuel tap assembly.
Yes you should do the wrenching yourself - how else will you learn.
When you take something off - pay attention to what it looks like and which screws/nuts/bolts hold it on - when reassembling - make sure you use the same bolt /screw/nut because the lenghts do make a significant difference.
